VETERANS ON SHOW! Super Weekend gets cracking at Caymanas
November 13, 2009, 10:48 am
The $1,000,000 Exotic Stones Creations' Legends and Veterans Jockey Race kicks off a nostalgic and copiously expectant Super Thoroughbred weekend of racing and yearling sales at Caymanas Park today. The 31st running of the $6,000,000 ADL 'Blanca Nieves' Superstakes will highlight tomorrow's second day, with the Toba Yearling Sales inside the Car Park at Caymanas closing the weekend of thoroughbred activities. Several jockeys who are now mostly trainers who will return to the saddle today in the Legends and Veterans Jockey Race at Caymanas Park assist with the drawing of post positions for tomorrow's ADL Superstakes event. Here, Neville Anderson picks a horse's name from a box held by CTL employee Shorna Pratt, while looking on (from left) are Patrick Beckford, Anderson, 'Duce' Morgan, Antonio Barker (partly hidden), 'Bobby' Williams and Fitzroy Glispie. The Exotic Stones Creations' Legends and Veterans event will be a short sprint over 800 metres straight and is expected to create a great stir among racing fans when some of the former masters of thoroughbred racing climb back into the saddle. Of the former masters invited, only 10 of the 14 cited will be on show, among them being Emelio "Bimbo" Rodriquez, James Douthall, Carl "Duce" Morgan, Patrick Beckford, Rory Brown and Gladstone "Bobby" Williams from overseas, along with local-based Fitzroy Glispie, Linton Calder and Antonio Barker - who are all successful trainers - and Neville Anderson, who rode three Derby winners in Cesario, Hello Poochie Liu and Dorval. A good look at the 10-horse field will show that the winner is likely to come from one of Rojo, ridden by Douthall, De-Bachelor with Glispie in the saddle, Milestone, the mount of Brown, and Twist Of Fate, piloted by Anderson. Others who are in with an outside shot are King Ferdinand, partnered by Rodriquez, and Seek Gold with Barker astride. Despite the interest that will be generated by the former outstanding jockeys on show, it is the idea of owning a horse after being chosen the owner by way of a losing ticket in the Horse Power To The People event that will command the attention of many punters today. Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) and Caribbean Producers Limited will offer members of the public in attendance at the track the opportunity to participate by writing the answer to a question as well as their names, telephone numbers and addresses on the back of a losing tickets and then drop them into boxes provided for this purpose at various locations at the track. All losing tickets from Race No 1 until two races prior to the one on which the promotion is being conducted will be eligible to participate in the draw. The question to be answered by participants is, Which company is sponsoring the Horse Power To The People promotion? Prior to the running of the race, a draw utilising drums will take place in the Winner's Enclosure. The name of a participant from the tickets from one drum will be selected and matched with one of the horses in the race chosen from another drum. No person can be assigned to more than one horse. The person whose name is matched with the winning horse will be the winner of the promotion. Should that person be not at the track on the day, CTL will undertake to contact the person within 48 hours after the winner is declared. However, failure to contact the person will result in the person whose name was marched second being declared the winner and so on, until a winner is declared. No owner, trainer, jockey or groom licensed to the Jamaica Racing Commission for the 2009 season or employees or personnel of the JRC, BG&LC and CTL will be eligible.
